Kilquhanity as a progressive school was run by John Aitkenhead and based on the teaching philosophy of AS Neill. After John's death the school was taken over by the Kinokumo Childrens Village who were inspired to continue his philosophy.

After many years of neglect the school buildings were in need of significant refurbishment. The building is listed grade B and all improvements and alterations had to take account of this and at the same time bring the facilities up to date and comply with current legislation.
